What is Tongits?
The Card Game Every Filipino Already Knows — Now Online
Tongits is one of the most popular card games in the Philippines. Ask almost any Filipino and they'll have a story about playing it — at a birthday party in the province, during a long barrio fiesta night, or just in a neighbour's sala while waiting for a typhoon to pass. It is woven into the everyday social fabric of Filipino life in a way few other games can claim.
The basic premise is simple: you're dealt 13 cards (the dealer gets 14), and the goal is to reduce your hand to the lowest point value by forming melds — sets and sequences — before your opponents do. It sounds easy, but anyone who has played more than a few rounds knows that the real game happens in the reading of your opponents, the management of what you draw and discard, and the timing of your calls.
At e games, we've taken that same game — the rules you already know, the rhythm you're already comfortable with — and put it on a platform that works beautifully on your phone, with real money at stake and opponents drawn from a pool of real Filipino players. Whether you're a casual player looking for a few quick rounds on a lunch break, or a serious Tongits player who wants to test their skills against stiff competition, e games has a table for you.
Quick heads-up: The version of Tongits at e games follows standard Filipino house rules — three players, 13-card hand, standard deck, with Tongits declared when a player has zero points left. Exactly the way it's played in real life.

How to Play Tongits – A Full Breakdown
If you're new to Tongits or just want to refresh before jumping into a real-money table on e games, here's everything you need to know about how the game works.
Tongits is a three-player rummy-style game played with a standard 52-card deck. The dealer receives 12 cards; the other two players receive 12 cards each. Wait — actually the correct standard deal is: the dealer gets 13 cards to start, and the draw pile is used from the first turn. The first player to the dealer's left draws from the pile, then discards. Play proceeds clockwise.
On your turn you draw one card — either from the top of the draw pile or from the discard pile (subject to sapaw rules) — form or extend melds if you can, then discard one card face up. The game continues until someone wins by Tongits, successful Fight call, or the draw pile runs out.
- 3 players, 1 standard deck (no jokers)
- Dealer deals 12 cards to each player; remaining cards form the draw pile
- Play moves clockwise starting from the player to the dealer's left
- Each turn: draw → meld/extend → discard
- Goal: reduce your hand's total point value to zero — or lower than both opponents when a call happens
Melds are the heart of Tongits. Laying down a valid meld removes those cards from your hand and reduces your points. There are two types:
| Meld Type | Description | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Set (Grupo) | Three or four cards of the same rank, different suits | 7♠ 7♥ 7♦ |
| Sequence (Pares) | Three or more consecutive cards of the same suit | 4♣ 5♣ 6♣ 7♣ |
| Sapaw | Adding cards to an opponent's exposed meld — but only when drawing from the discard pile | Adding 8♣ to opponent's 4♣-5♣-6♣-7♣ |
A minimum of three cards is required to lay down a meld. You can extend your own melds on subsequent turns by adding valid cards from your hand.
There are three ways a round ends in Tongits:
Tongits!
A player draws a card that lets them meld their entire remaining hand — zero cards left, zero points. Automatic win. This is the highest-value win and every player at e games is chasing it.
Fight (Sagot)
Any player can call a Fight after their first turn, at the start of their turn, challenging both opponents to show their remaining hand. The player with the lowest total point value wins the round.
Draw Pile Exhausted
If the draw pile runs out before anyone wins, all players reveal their hands. The player with the lowest point total takes the pot. Ties are split.
Cards in your unmelded hand count against you. Here's the point value for each card:
| Card | Point Value | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Ace (A) | 1 point | Lowest face value, great to hold unmelded |
| 2 through 9 | Face value (2–9 pts) | Standard numbered cards |
| 10, Jack (J), Queen (Q), King (K) | 10 points each | High-value cards — discard these early if unmelded |
The goal is to minimise the total points of cards still in your hand. A hand of three Aces and a 2 totals just 5 points — very hard to beat in a Fight call.

Tongits Tips to Level Up Your Game on e games
Tongits is not purely a luck game. The more you play, the more patterns you start recognising — and the better your decisions become. Here are some habits that consistently separate strong Tongits players from average ones:
Watch the Discard Pile
The discard pile tells you a lot. Cards your opponents throw away hint at what suits and sequences they're building. Don't discard into your opponents' obvious melds.
Dump High Cards Early
Face cards (10, J, Q, K) are worth 10 points each. If they're not part of a meld by mid-game, discard them while you still can — they're dead weight if a Fight is called.
Time Your Fight Call
Don't call a Fight the moment you feel confident — wait until you've assessed whether your opponents might have even lower totals. Calling too early is one of the most common mistakes.
Use Sapaw Wisely
Sapaw — adding to an opponent's meld — can unload high-point cards from your hand, but it requires drawing from the discard pile, which gives your opponents information. Use it strategically.
